Mindfulness for college students

College is an incredibly stressful time. Whilst you are there, you are constantly going to be surrounded by distractions. Not only are you going to be studying harder than you have ever studied in your life, but you are also going to be dealing with living in a new environment, surrounded by people who you just don’t know, at least at the start. It really is a wonder that anybody is able to get through college without too many issues.

Whilst there are a number of different methods for improving your college experience, there is just one that we want to focus on right here. This is mindfulness. This technique is fantastic for those college students who really wish to focus on the task ahead and do not wish to be distracted by all that is going on around them. One study, carried out by the University of Miami, indicates that it is highly effective too.

Here are a just a few of the benefits that a student who practises mindfulness will be able to enjoy:

·         Reduced stress: as any student will tell you, studying is an incredibly stressful time. You will be studying a number of different subjects and, sadly, their exams are all going to crop up at the same time. Now, if you are ‘doing college’ properly, then you should be studying every single day, for numerous hours. This should, hopefully, stop you from becoming too overwhelmed when exams start to roll around. However, sadly, no matter how hard you study you will eventually need to deal with huge amounts of stress. If you are stressed, it is difficult to actually get the will to sit down and actually study, let alone absorb any information. Too much stress can make you mentally and physically ill. You need to eliminate it, and mindfulness is one of the best ways to deal with that.

·         Mindfulness can also assist by improving your levels of concentration and focus. An increased amount of both will ensure that you are able to take in more information, even during those shorter study sessions. It also means that you will be able to enjoy long study sessions without needing to take a break. Basically; you are going to end up being a whole lot more productive.

·         Finally; mindfulness provides a way in which you can train your brain. You will be able to ‘teach’ it how to store information a bit better. You will also be able to ‘teach’ it how to recall that information during an examination. Sadly, tests nowadays are all about teaching memory skills as opposed to intelligence. No matter how ‘smart’ you are, if you simply do not remember the facts and figures that you need, you are not going to pass those exams. Mindfulness practised regularly will help you to round out those ‘brain tools’ to ensure that you give yourself the best possible chance of succeeding with your exams.

Remember; mindfulness is not the complete solution to performing better at college. You are going to need to put in the work required too. However, mindfulness, providing you practise the right techniques regularly, will greatly increase your chances of getting through those college examinations completely ‘unscathed’.
